Hunter motorists are seeing the first glimpse of progress on the Hexham Straight Widening project with the first girder lifted into place over Ironbark Creek recently.

Piling work for the new bridge has been underway since February and now the first of 65 precast girders has been slotted into place.

This is the next step in creating the 84 metre long, 17.1 metre wide, southbound bridge, which has four spans and is designed to take three lanes of traffic when the project is complete.

The Australian and NSW Governments have worked together to provide $2.1 billion to deliver the M1 extension and the Hexham Straight widening projects – with $1.68 billion from the Australian Government and $420 million from NSW.

The project is expected to be open to traffic in 2026.
