Grade (Gradient)

Definition: The vertical slope of track expressed as a percentage or ratio. Grades affect train acceleration, fuel consumption, and maintenance requirements. Steep grades (>3%) require limited train lengths and higher maintenance.

Example: Mountain railroad grades of 7% require helper locomotives
