With record investment in Ireland’s rail network under the National Development Plan, Iarnród Éireann is currently advancing a wide array of infrastructure projects and essential maintenance across its lines nationwide.
Major projects which will be progressed this year include:
-
-
The Cork Area Commuter Rail projects, which involve twin-tracking of the Midleton line, a new platform at Kent Station, and resignalling works that will collectively triple capacity for Cork’s commuter services.
-
Construction on the new Ceannt Station in Galway and the relocated Plunkett Station in Waterford.
-
Systems testing for the National Train Control Centre.
-
DART+ recharging facilities installation for new electric trains in Drogheda.
-
Continued renewal of overhead lines on the DART network.
-
Construction of the new Woodbrook DART Station in south Dublin, scheduled to open in summer 2025.
-
A series of infrastructure upgrades including track renewal, bridge replacement, points and crossing renewals, and various other maintenance works at multiple locations.
Planning is also underway for projects scheduled beyond 2026, such as design work for enabling infrastructure on DART+ West, covering the Maynooth and M3 Parkway lines.
Although the majority of work occurs overnight or in ways that minimize disruption, some interruptions to services are inevitable, especially when essential components like tracks, bridges, signalling systems, or overhead lines are being upgraded. Iarnród Éireann also assists third-party projects that impact the rail network.
Efforts are made to minimize inconvenience, including:
-
Avoiding peak weekday periods on high-traffic lines.
-
Coordinating construction timelines with major national events—sports, music, and cultural activities are all considered.
-
Scheduling large-scale projects during selected Bank Holiday weekends, which offer additional working days without affecting weekday commuters. While no works are planned during the tourism-critical St Patrick’s weekend, other holidays such as St Brigid’s (February), Easter, and the May, June, August (occasionally), and October Bank Holidays are utilized for significant progress.
While additional works may affect certain services, particularly late evening or early morning, the current schedule (as of 31st March 2025) lists the major disruptive works planned up to November 2025. This schedule is subject to change based on project revisions, new event schedules, or additional funding.
