Major Works Preview 2022
In line with the National Development Plan, Iarnród Éireann continued its significant investment in Ireland’s rail infrastructure throughout 2022. Projects included the replacement and enhancement of essential infrastructure such as tracks, bridges, signalling systems, and overhead lines, alongside work supporting major third-party developments.
While the majority of these works were scheduled outside of peak hours to minimise disruption, some projects unavoidably impacted services due to their scale or complexity. Iarnród Éireann remained committed to minimising the extent and effect of these disruptions for customers.
The company adopted a series of key strategies to reduce impact:
-
Peak weekday times on the busiest routes were protected, with most disruptive works avoided during these periods.
-
Planning was coordinated with major national events, including sporting, musical, and cultural fixtures, which are increasingly frequent and diverse.
-
Bank Holiday weekends were strategically used for larger projects, making use of the extended timeframe to advance work while limiting weekday effects. No works were scheduled during St Patrick’s weekend or the August Bank Holiday, in recognition of their importance for tourism. Easter, and the May, June, and October Bank Holidays were typically used — although in 2022, no major works were planned for the June Bank Holiday due to an unusually high volume of national events.
In addition to these major works, some late evening and early morning services may have been affected by smaller projects. The schedule listed (as of 28th May 2022) represented the most significant disruptive works planned for that year. As always, this was subject to revision, based on evolving event schedules or additional investment.
Note: Bold text indicates extended works, including those with weekday service impacts.
