Jamaica, NY Rail Bridge, Accelerated Construction, Gantry Launch in Action

Project Snapshot

It’s not a bird, and it’s not a plane—soon, it’ll be a flying bridge. In one of the most unique rail infrastructure efforts underway, a 2-track rail bridge is being assembled for incremental launching across 150th Street in Jamaica, NY.

Why It’s Unique

  • This bridge is part of an Accelerated Bridge Construction (ABC) initiative

  • Assembly is taking place on the approach end using gantry cranes, not large mobile cranes

  • Instead of shutting down half of one of America’s busiest rail interlockings, the project:

    • Only takes 1 of 11 tracks out of service each weekend for launching

    • Reduces impacts to Long Island Rail Road (LIRR) operations

Engineering First?

  • This may be the first rail bridge to be launched in this way in the U.S.

  • The launching method keeps rail operations largely intact

  • A rare opportunity to witness a bridge going airborne in real time
