City Rail Link, Auckland, Sandbag Testing, Tunnel Clearance Verification

Testing Update

Summer might be over, but sand is still making an appearance—this time in the form of 45 tonnes of sandbags loaded into a test train as part of the latest dynamic testing phase for Auckland’s City Rail Link (CRL).

Why Sandbags?

  • Purpose: Simulate the weight and distribution of a fully loaded passenger train

  • Objective:

    • Verify tunnel and platform clearances

    • Assess how the train moves and responds under full load conditions

    • Ensure safety and performance under peak passenger volumes

Test Train Partners

This testing effort was a collaborative success, involving:

  • Link Alliance – Leading the dynamic testing operations

  • Auckland Transport – Operator and stakeholder

  • City Rail Link Ltd – Project owner

  • Auckland One Rail – Supporting operations

Looking Ahead

  • CRL remains on track for opening in 2026

  • These critical tests are part of ensuring the system is safe, reliable, and ready for service on day one
