KiwiRail took over the rail network for 18 days. This allowed them to complete upgrades and maintenance at 17 different sites across the region.
KiwiRail worked round the clock at Wellington Station to finish the signals upgrade and track reconfiguration, with up to 180 workers on site each shift. Other works included platform upgrades, track replacement, ducting and overhead line work.
KiwiRail teams worked hard against tight deadlines to safely deliver a large amount of work – ka mau te wehi (awesome)!
NOTE: Wairarapa trains are still suspended while KiwiRail continue working 24/7 to renew almost 9km of ballast, sleepers and rail in the Remutaka Tunnel. Services are expected to resume on 10 Feb.
