State Library Station—one of the five new underground stations being delivered as part of Melbourne’s Metro Tunnel Project—has been making steady and exciting progress.

What’s Happening Lately?

  • The station is rapidly taking shape both above and below ground

  • Architectural elements, including interior finishes, escalators, and lighting systems, are being progressively installed

  • External works are preparing the precinct for future activation and public access

Why It Matters

  • Located under Swanston Street, State Library Station will provide key connections to Melbourne Central Station, RMIT, and surrounding institutions

  • It will significantly reduce congestion and improve passenger flow across the city loop

  • Part of the transformative Metro Tunnel Project—unlocking capacity for more than half a million extra passengers every week

Looking Ahead

  • The Metro Tunnel is on track to open in 2025

  • State Library Station will be a key interchange, enhancing citywide connectivity and commuter experience
